Bukit Brown is one of those locations that makes me genuinely excited when a client picks it. It's moody. It's green. It's got this quiet, almost cinematic energy that you just can't find at your typical Singapore park.

Here's everything you need to know about shooting here, perfect if you have an adventurous dog and love the unknown!

🌳 What / where is Bukit Brown?

Bukit Brown is Singapore's largest non-Christian cemetery still in its original state, with towering 'Avatar' trees, dappled light filtering through thick canopy, winding red-earth paths, and this rare kind of quiet that's hard to come by in the city.

For dogs (and their photographers 👀), that's a dream combination. The textures are incredible — roots, bark, leaf litter, patches of golden light. There's even a stream running through mid-hike. Every frame has a depth and richness you just don't get at a manicured park. It's not a typical weekend hangout, it's an adventure for your dog to be themselves, hop over fallen trunks and sniff their hearts out.

☀️ When should we shoot here?

Poppy and I have done our reconnaissance (as always 🕵🏻‍♀️), and our sweet spot is 7–9am on weekday mornings. The light comes in golden and slanted through the trees, the paths are deliciously quiet, and your dog is usually at peak energy before the heat kicks in. Just avoid afternoons for any type of hike, because it gets warm and humid out here, even if it's very sheltered.

📸 What kinds of shots can we get?

Zoomies / hopping shots — the fallen tree trunks will make your dog zoom for sure!

Through the bushes — there's SO MUCH green here, your dog will surely tunnel through the bushes and do that again and again

The explorer shots — if your dog is a nose-to-the-ground, gotta-sniff-everything adventurer, Bukit Brown will make them look like the main character of a nature documentary. I love it when I can show the scale of an environment

🐾 Practical things to know before we go

Usually when I'm here with dogs they will be off-leash by mid-hike - the front of the hike is beside a highway, so I would recommend to hold on to them first. If you're not sure if your dog will have recall in a forest, don't worry about it! I edit leashes out of every single final image, so that's not something you need to stress about at all.

The terrain is uneven in places — tree roots, the occasional muddy patch. Wear shoes you're okay getting dirty (and maybe bring a change for after!). There are no facilities inside so pack water for your dog. If you book a photoshoot with me, you will also be getting a photoshoot guide that will help you prep.

Parking is along University Road. No parking fee!

Is Bukit Brown right for my dog?

Bukit Brown tends to work really well for dogs who are fairly comfortable in new environmentsand of course if they really, really love an adventure. It's quiet but it comes with winding paths, very gentle hills and probably a lot of critters.

If your dog needs a lot of space to warm up, we'd probably chat about starting somewhere more open, and that's exactly the kind of thing we figure out together before we even think about locations. No two dogs are the same, and no two shoots should be either!
